Once upon a time Igor Andreichyn was a programmer winning country wide contests, but these days he is spearheading a minimalist and modern lighting brand known as Reflektion.
Born in Ukraine to an artistic family, Igor broke the mould with his love for math, electronics and computers. Rather than following in his grandparents and parents footsteps and pursuing a career in architecture, interior design or lithography, he chose to study programming and subsequently created his own start up - an online app for personal money management.
Igor’s passion towards software development and the things surrounding it eventually dwindled. He sold his company and after a few years of traveling around Asia and Europe he settled in Munich, Germany. He started woodworking as a new hobby but it was the quest of finding a new light for his flat that truly changed his career direction.
...he was less than convinced and decided to take matters into his own hands...
Appreciating that the style, size and positioning of a light can really transform and dictate the look and feel of a room, Igor spent well over budget on something that he thought would achieve just that. When it arrived though, he was less than convinced and decided to take matters into his own hands by experimenting with some Christmas lights and square aluminium profile to create his own lighting solution.
This was Igor’s eureka moment and the morning after he decided that he would make and sell light sculptures. To avoid over complicating things he decided to work on a single 2d plane and started to look for shapes and geometry in the world and nature such as mountains, road signs and skylines. After looking for over a year he decided that a simple, clean square was in actual fact just perfect and so Kvadrat (square in ukranian) was conceived.
All of his products follow this blueprint, but are each unique through the shapes that they reflect.
Inspired by the black square painting by Kazimir Malevich, Kvadrat is everything Igor wants to instil in his work. It is precise, sharp and eye catching but doesn’t over exert itself - effortlessly dominating the wall it has been gifted to. Made from anodised aluminium its line width, size and colour have been carefully managed by Igor, this methodological approach is probably thanks to his math and programming days. All of his products follow this blueprint, but are each unique through the shapes that they reflect.
Like everybody, Igor’s plans for 2020 (and 2021 so far) have been disrupted by Covid. Whilst he was not able to attend Milan Design Week or the Light + Building show in Frankfurt as planned, he intends to when it is safe to do so. We for one can not wait to see Reflektion on the big stage.
