Welcome to the whimsical world of Sam Lander. Sam is a British Designer Maker from Chesterfield, Derbyshire. He studied Three Dimensional Design at Manchester School Of Art and is the creative force that has spun most notably, the ‘Whirligig’ basin, into life.
Sam’s bespoke ‘Whirligig’ basins are each made from concrete, a material he says has great potential for a designer maker due to its changing state from liquid to solid. The basins are a carnival of vibrant colours and patterns and are suitably named after the machine that spins the materials - the ultimate acknowledgement!
"...resulting in the whole thing starting to wobble across a shared workshop floor towards horrified people"
Whilst Sam has nailed this process now, he does recount a time when the ‘Whirligig’ was in its youthful, less cooperative days and suffering from a few teething problems:
‘The worst thing which went wrong is whilst I was at University I rented out a tiny little workspace shared with others in Cheetham Hill. The ‘Whirligig’ machine was in its first generation and the mould relied upon ratchet straps to hold down the mould whilst being spun. The mould full of concrete came away from being central in relationship with the motor shaft due to a loose ratchet strap. This having a massive impact on the gyroscopic effect being shifted out with all the weight of the mould, including being full of concrete, relying solely upon the machine to keep everything stable. Which the machine failed to do resulting in the whole thing starting to wobble across a shared workshop floor towards horrified people, only stopping when it pulled the plug out of the power.’
As well as fine tuning manufacturing techniques Sam has also created worktops and a line of pendant lights, but it doesn’t stop there. We can look forward to concrete splash backs and large concrete tiles in the near future which will no doubt contain all of the personality and style of his previous and current work.
One thing is for certain, if your space needs an injection of colour and character, look no further than samlander.maker .
